Il First Conditional è la forma condizionale inglese (frase ipotetica di 1° tipo) che indica che la condizione descritta nella frase ipotetica (if-clause) è probabile, reale e che quindi l'azione descritta nella frase principale (main-clause) è realizzabile.

Il First Conditional si forma con...

IF + Simple Present, + Future Simple.

If you go I'll go too.
Se vai, vado anch'io (nota: in italiano non usiamo il futuro!)

If you pass your exams, I'll buy you a car.
Se superi l'esame ti compro una macchina.

Let me know if you're in the Atlanta one day and I'll pay you a beer.

Distinguere tra zero conditional e first conditional

Si prenda il seguente esempio:

If you call me, I come.
If you call me, I'll come.

La prima frase suggerisce una sorta di regola generale a cui sembra aderire chi parla.
La seconda invece suggerisce un'intenzione di compiere un'azione (che molto probabilmente avverrà).

Uso del first conditional

Si usa il first conditional nelle offerte, nei consigli, negli avvertimenti, nelle minacce.

If we hurry, we'll catch the bus.
If we miss it, there will be another one.
If you don't leave, I'll call the police.
If you don't drop the gun, I'll shoot!
If you say that again, I'll scream.

Non solo If

Unless you do something really bad, your job here will be quite safe.

Per enfatizzare il fatto che una cosa dipenda dall'altra si può usare anche if... then:

If she can't come to us, then we'll have to go and see her.

First conditional e i modali

Naturalmente il first conditional può contenere verbi modali. In questo caso si sostituisce il will con il verbo modale. Vediamone l'uso:

If you drop that glass, it might break.
Se fai cade il bicchiere, potrebbe rompersi.

I may finish that letter if I have time.
Potrei finire quella lettera se avrò tempo

If you want to pass the exam you should study more.
Se vuoi passare l'esame dovresti studiare di più.
