Can e Could

Il verbo modale Can significa ‘potere’ ed è usato per:

• esprimere una capacità o abilità, sostenere che qualcosa o qualcuno è capace di fare qualcosa e/o sa come farla.
  esempio: I can play guitar but I can’t play the piano.
  in questo caso è sostituibile con be able to
  esempio: Now I’m able to speak English quite fluently.
  
• esprimere, chiedere o dare permesso
  esempio: Can I have a beer while i’m six months pregnant?
  
• esprimere la possibilità o l’impossibilità
  esempio: Anyone can become President.

Could è da considerarsi come il passato di can. Ma viene usato anche per esprimere in maniera più formale il permesso, quindi è da considerarsi anche il condizionale di can (potrei, potresti…).
