La forma impersonale del pronome riflessivo è oneself.
I pronomi riflessivi si usano in diverse situazioni:
- Quando soggetto e complemento oggetto sono gli stessi:
I hurt myself; The band call themselves “Dublin Brothers”; He shot himself. - Come complemento con preposizione, che si riferisce al soggetto:
I bought a present for myself; She made her dress by herself; That man is talking to himself. - Quando si vuole enfatizzare il soggetto:
I’ll do it myself (Nessun altro mi aiuterà ); They ate all the food themselves (Nessun altro ne ha avuto); You yourself saw what happened (Tu stesso hai visto cos’è successo). - Con un imperativo esortativo:
Take care of yourself (Abbi cura di te).
Spesso possiamo tradurre i pronomi riflessivi con il significato di “fare da soli”
Quando si indica reprocità fra due persone si usa each other oppure one another.
esempio: We’ve known each other / one another for many years.
Alcuni verbi non richiedono il pronome riflessivo come in italiano
esempi: I’ve cut my hair (Mi sono tagliato i capelli)
