Il Present Continuous Tense (o Present Progressive Tense) si usa in inglese per descrivere azioni che si stanno svolgendo in questo preciso momento, o programmate nel futuro.

Si forma con il simple present del verbo essere + il gerundio del verbo seguente (in -ing)

I am working
You are working
He is working
She is working
It is working
We are working
You are working
They are working

La maggior parte dei verbi forma il gerundio aggiungendo -ing. Altriseguono alcune regole particolari:

• verbi che terminano con 1 vocale + 1 consonante:
  si raddoppia la consonante e si aggiunge -ing
  esempi: swim - swimming; get - getting
• verbi che terminano con 1 vocale + 1 consonante + e
  si elimina la e e si aggiunge -ing
  esempi: come - coming; live - living

Forme interrogativa e negativa del present continuous

La forma negativa aggiunge il not tra il verbo essere e il gerundio. Nell'esempio sotto si evidenziano tra parentesi le contrazioni.

I am not working (I'm not working)
You are not working (You aren't working)
He is not working (He isn't working)
She is not working (She isn't working)
It is not working (It isn't working)
We are not working (We aren't working)
You are not working (You aren't working)
They are not working (They aren't working)

Nella forma interrogativa si fa precedere il verbo essere al soggetto:

Am I singing?
Are you singing?
Is he singing?
Is she singing?
Is it singing?
Are we singing?
Are you singing?
Are they singing?

Se ci sono aggettivi o pronomi interrogativi come What, Where, Why, When, Which, Who si mettono all'inizio della frase:

Why am I singing?
Where are you singing?
What is he singing?
Which song is she singing?
Where is it singing?
Why are we singing?
Where are you singing?
What are they singing?
