Il verbo "to make" con l'aggiunta della preposizione "up", ha due significati:

1) inventare (scuse, bugie, storie)

I don't believe Tom had a beer with a top model last night. I'm sure he made it up!

2) ripararare, compensare per qualcosa che si è fatto/non si è fatto

How can I make it up for the pain I've caused to you?

Se al verbo "to make", oltre ad aggiungere la preposizione "up" aggiungiamo (in presenza del complemento oggetto) la preposizione "with", ecco che il verbo assume il significato di "far pace"

Sheila and I used to be very close but now she feels I've hurt her and we are not talking to each other. How can I make up with her?

The two lovers quarrelled a lot but in the end they made up.
